Joshua Morse – Sparkle

Last Halloween, JM dropped Sonata of the Damned, an EP of tracks remixing different tunes from the Castlevania series. The whole album was good, but maaaaaan, Sparkle was my jam! “Emerald Mist” from CV: Order of Ecclesia is a great song (what Castlevania track isn’t?), but the “Morsed” version definitely takes the original to new levels that I never would have considered if it were me remixing this song (in case you didn’t know, I remix video game music too). Check out Sparkle, then after you’re done, do yourself a favor and hit up the rest of Sonata of the Damned.

P.O.E.T – Lights Fade (ft. Shane Kora)

P.O.E.T - Lights Fade (ft. Shane Kora)

Okay, so today’s my birthday (yay me!) but I wanted to post this really cool song, as well as announce that Smoothed Out is now on Twitter! Follow us at twitter.com/Smoothed_Out and get updates on new posts and assorted shizz. Now on to the music:

My friend P.O.E.T has been doing his spoken word thing for a few years; you can usually find him hitting the open mic circuit in and around NYC. This is the first single from his upcoming second album, Nerd at the Cool Table. The jazz backdrop accentuates his poetry perfectly, and the vocals from Shane Kora are a homerun. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of the album. Til it hits, this ought to tide you over; and since the track only costs a dollar, the price is definitely right!

Sonic Skillz – Sonic Adventure (Special Edition)

Sonic Skillz - Sonic Adventure (Special Edition)

I know I’ve posted about my EP before, but I wanted to put the word out that it’s now on iTunes with a new track entitled Life & Times. Also, if you haven’t gotten your copy yet, now would be a good time since a portion of sales will be donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, an awesome charity. So if you wanna get some good tunes and give to a good cause, I won’t stop you. =)

Wish – Suga Daddy

Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for a new Wish album? Far too long, it seems. She finally unleashed Suga Daddy, the first single from Stripdown, earlier this week and it seems like she and Donny Roc are picking up right where Skool Gurl Diaries left off. It’s got a real old school vibe with elements of modern music fitting right in (I could do without the Auto-Tune, but that’s a personal preference). Hopefully now that this is out in the world, Stripdown won’t be too far behind.

Ron Isley – Close to You (ft. Lauryn Hill)

It’s Ron Isley and Lauryn Hill, covering The Carpenters’ classic. Do I really need to say any more? I didn’t think so.

Oh, and about the Homer & Marge Simpson picture, (They Long to Be) Close to You was their “song.” Now it makes sense!

Andy Allo – DreamLand (ft. Blu)

Y’know, I must say I’m embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t heard of Andy Allo before coming across this the video for DreamLand. After hearing her utter one note, I immediately became a fan. I love her voice; everything I mentioned about Carlitta also applies to Andy. Also like Carlitta, she’s got a talented MC (in this case, Blu) contributing a piece to the song, but not taking the spotlight from her. I definitely recommend getting this one and zoning out.

El DeBarge – Second Chance

This is why I love Centric – just when I was feeling low about the state of mainstream contemporary R&B, they play this new track from El DeBarge. I knew El was making a comeback, but I didn’t know it was gonna yield something this smooth. And not too many people can make the falsetto work at 49 years old, but he nails it.

D. Malone – What Would You Do

D. Malone - What Would You Do

D. Malone is gorgeous, loves tattoos, and can sing her ass off; needless to say, I’m madly in love with her. I could end this post with that, but I should probably continue. I’m been a big fan of Miss Malone since my buddy Drawzilla put me on to her a while back, and without exaggerating, I think she’s gonna go real far. Here’s her new single, What Would You Do…wouldn’t this fit in perfectly in the soundtrack to Black Dynamite or something similar? I hear this song’s been getting some radio play in the NYC area, and it’s not hard to hear why.

Side note: Check out D. Malone’s last single, Pucker Up…maybe we’ll get an album out of her soon (and maybe I can help work on it!).

Joella – Catch My Tears

Joella - Catch My Tears

I’m really digging this one from Joella; it’s chill, but the electronic elements give it a certain kind of energy too. This track is off her No Make-Up EP, which is scheduled to hit the internets on September 7. I know I’m looking forward to it!

Michael Jackson – Speechless

Michael Jackson - Speechless

I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge that today would have been Michael Jackson‘s 52nd birthday. It’s still hard to believe it’s been a year since he’s passed away; if anything good has come out of his death, it’s been that people are revisiting his catalog, which is massive and pretty badass. When thinking of a song to post here, I didn’t wanna go with any of the obvious choices. Rather, I chose Speechless, one of my favorite songs of his from his Invincible album (which never got the props it deserved IMO).
