Jhené Aiko – Stranger

Jhené Aiko just dropped the visuals for Stranger, from her sailing soul(s) mixtape. To be 100% honest, I wasn’t even aware Jhené had dropped something new, but I really dug this video, and am definitely gonna be checking out the mixtape in its entirety. If the rest of the project (featuring such notables as Miguel and Drake) are anything like this, sailing soul(s) should be a real treat.

Jesse Boykins III – Way of a Wayfarer

Jesse Boykins III - Way of a Wayfarer

Wow, a month passes by pretty quick, doesn’t it? Well here’s a album that’s definitely worth waiting for…right on the heels of his appearance on Skyzoo‘s Expensive Habits, JBIII drops his new EP, Way of a Wayfarer. Seriously though, this dude’s voice is too smooth for words. I wasn’t terribly familiar with his stuff previously, but now I’m a HUGE fan. Enough said, check this one out for the superchilloutness (yep, totally just made that word up).

Skyzoo – Expensive Habits (ft. Jesse Boykins III)

Skyzoo - Expensive Habits (ft. Jesse Boykins III)

We’ve seen/heard Skyzoo featured on a couple tracks here but this is the first time he’s been the main attraction, so to speak. This one’s from his recently-released The Great Debater mixtape, and features Jesse “This Voice Is Too Smooth To Come From A Human Being” Boykins III. Sky rarely puts out chill tracks like this on his own, but hopefully this is a start to something new. Be sure to give the rest of The Great Debater a listen too; if it’s any indication, his A Dream Deferred album (set to release this fall) should be in “Greatest Album Ever” territory.

Jazzy – Letters to a King

Jazzy - Letters to a King

Wow, where has Jazzy been all my life? I recently came across this EP of covers and I’m blown away. I mean, you’ve got to have a HUGE set of balls to cover artists like Sade or Anita Baker, but Jazzy hits a home run on every song. I highly recommend hitting Jazzy’s homepage and checking out what else she’s got; there’s even a remix of her Love Hangover cover, featuring none other than Busta Rhymes!

Wish – Opening Act: The WISHtape

Wish - Opening Act: The WISHtape

It’s always great to hear new music from Wish! Released this weekend presumably to tide us over until her Jive Records debut drops, Opening Act has a helping of Feel Ur Beat-esque boom-tss as well as the sangin’ that made Skool Gurl Diaries a must-listen (seriously, get it if you haven’t). The great thing about Wish is that as awesome as she is (and has been since I first hear her a few years ago), she’s still getting better.Thumbs up; get it get it get it.

Raheem DeVaughn – Jackin’ 4 Beats Vol. 2

Raheem DeVaughn - Jackin' 4 Beats Vol. 2

Okay, my computer is back so let’s get into it. Raheem DeVaughn recently dropped this mixtape, and just like pretty much everything else he does, he hits a homerun. I can’t honestly say I know all the songs he’s performing over, but he definitely makes the beats sound like they were custom-made for him – not everyone who performs over “industry beats” can pull that off. And thank [insert deity here] that the “mixtape DJ shouting over the track” madness was kept to a minimum! While I’m sure I’ll be bumpin’ this for a while, I can’t wait for RD to drop another official album; this will certainly do until then.

Joshua Morse – Fifty Rings to Ride

I’ve been meaning to post this since The Sound of Speed dropped, and since today is JM‘s birthday, I figured there’s no time like the present! Maybe it’s my predilection for the Sonic the Hedgehog soundtrack, but this might be one of my favorite Morse tracks. Doing Sonic proper justice is NOT easy, and JM hits a homerun with this medley. But enough talk; listen, download, love it.

Raphael Saadiq – Good Man

While my computer has been in the shop, I’ve been watching more music videos than I had in years. One video I was surprised I missed was Raphael Saadiq‘s Good Man, which surprised me since I’m a HUGE Raphael Saadiq fan. Besides the great songwriting and musicianship, one thing I love about this song – as well as a lot of RS’s recent releases – is the fact that it has an overall “retro” feel; from the sound to the mixing, it pretty much sounds exactly like something you’d hear in the golden age of Motown. So a definite thumbs up to Raphael; his Stone Rollin’ album is certainly on my “must have” list.

Justin Bieber – Baby (Sonic Skillz Mix) (ft. Ludacris)

Justin Bieber - Baby (Sonic Skillz Mix) (ft. Ludacris)

Yes, I remixed a Justin Bieber song; don’t you DARE judge me. It surprises some people to know that I”ve been able to avoid “Bieber Fever” since it hit, since I’m not a big radio/music video guy. I did happen to hear this song and didn’t think it warranted all the hate it was getting. I had one of those “If I made this song I would have…” moments, and decided to try my hand at it. More than a few people have said they like my mix despite loathing the original, so yay me!

Heather Victoria – Graffiti Diary

Heather Victoria - Graffiti Diary

This album dropped last week, but due to unforeseen (and extremely annoying :() computer issues, I’m only getting to post it now. Anyway, tunes from Heather Victoria are always well worth the wait. She recently dropped her second album and definitely doesn’t stray too far from what brought her to the dance at IWWMG: mid-90’s sounding R&B jammage produced by the good folks at the Soul Council, and features from her fellow Jamla artists. If I did have one small gripe, it’d be that the aforementioned features might be a little too numerous; I give her props for wanting to include all her labelmates on her album, but it while the number of features isn’t a deal-breaker per se, it wouldn’t have hurt matters for a couple of them to sit this one out. In any event, Graffiti Diary is a very solid album, which is becoming par for the course with HV.
