Carlitta Durand – Lost Love (ft. Jabee)

I can’t get enough of Carlitta Durand‘s voice; it’s soulful and jazzy and all-around awesome. Lost Love was one of my favorite tracks from the Doug and Patty EP that she dropped last Christmas Eve, and I was thrilled that she and Jabee made a video of the song. If you haven’t heard Doug and Patty yet, I implore you to check it out…and if you wanna contact Carlitta and encourage her to collab with yours truly, I won’t mind. 🙂

Aaliyah – I Care 4 U

If you’re an R&B music fan – and if you’re reading this, chance are that you are – you know (or at least should know) that Aaliyah passed away 9 years ago today. Aaliyah is still one of my favorite singers; her voice was incredible and, let’s face it, she was smokin’ hot. I had this conversation with a friend a few months back: Aaliyah died when she was 22, which probably puts her “peak” at about 17 or 18 (though truthfully I doubt she’d reached her true peak, but follow along with me). This means that at 17, she could vocally annihilate most of these R&B chicks who are well into their 20s and 30s.

Anyway, here’s my favorite Aaliyah song, I Care 4 U, from her self-titled final album. This song is smooth as hell and rather unappreciated…and if you know me at all, you already know my unhealthy addiction for Rhodes piano. Listen to it, vibe out, buy it, and you too will wish you could trade in some of these current R&B acts for more Aaliyah.

Sonic Skillz – Sonic Adventure

Sonic Skillz - Sonic Adventure

Before you ask, yes this is my album. Is there a conflict of interest? Perhaps. But it falls within the parameters I set for the site, and is a pretty damn good album if I do say so myself. I released it in May and it got a very positive reception, so to the (hopefully) growing visitors of this site who may not have heard it yet, check it out and download it; if nothing else, it’ll go toward keeping Smoothed Out running.

Erica Thompson – Who

Erica Thompson - Who

I almost forgot about this little gem. Erica sent me this shortly after it was released and I’ve been addicted to it ever since. It’s got such a smooth neo soul-esque vibe to it, and the instrumental sounds so cohesive for something that was worked on by six different people. If I’m not mistaken, this is the only solo song I’ve heard from Erica; we might need to change that… *adds Erica to wish-list*

Norman Brown – That’s the Way Love Goes

This song isn’t new, but man is it awesome. Janet Jackson’s That’s the Way Love Goes is one of my favorite songs in the history of anything, and a few years ago I heard this badass cover of it on a local smooth jazz station. After some research, I found out it was by a talented guitarist named Norman Brown. If you haven’t heard his version of the song before, I strongly advise you to check it out; I think I might even like his version better than Janet’s!

Craig David – All Alone Tonight (Stop Look Listen)

What a long, un-updated weekend…let’s get back into it. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a huge Craig David fan. I’ve been digging his stuff since the Born to Do It days, and one of his B-sides even inspired the name of this very website. Craig dropped an album this past spring primarily comprised of covers from the Motown/Tamla era, but this track was easily the standout. Kinda reminds me of the stuff he was doing in the Born to Do It and Slicker Than Your Average Days.

And while we’re on the topic of Craig David, go get The Story Goes…; it never came out in the U.S. (some fool of a person thought it wouldn’t get over here), but it’s one of my favorite R&B albums.

Joshua Morse – Bombada Original Soundtrack

Joshua Morse - Bombada Original Soundtrack

About a month ago, JM sent me a link to a puzzle game called Bombada, which he did the music and SFX for. Just when I was about to ask him to let the soundtrack loose, he dropped it on his Bandcamp page. It’s real slick jazzy stuff, and it’s only 3 bucks; think of it as getting one of the songs free!

Lydia Caesar – Masterpiece

Lydia Caesar - Masterpiece

I LOVE Lydia Caesar‘s work. Since I first heard her stuff, the musician in me has been dying for a collab, and the music lover in me has simply been hooked. This is her newest song, Masterpiece, which I believe will be on her debut album, (the awesomely-titled) Electric Love Garden. In all seriousness, this Trilogy-produced track needs to be playing at the end of a romantic comedy or something; make that happen!
